South Thailand

Limestone Karsts, Jungle Lakes, and Hidden Islands

Beyond Phuket

Beyond Phuket's resort strips lies a south Thailand few tourists ever reach. Sea kayak through cathedral caves in Phang Nga Bay. Wake up on a floating bungalow above Cheow Lan Lake deep inside Khao Sok National Park — one of the world's oldest rainforests, older than the Amazon. Cross to Koh Yao Noi, a Muslim fishing island where longtail boats outnumber cars and the bay views are the same ones the postcards stole from. Wind through the limestone spires of Krabi off-season, when the beaches recede and the karsts keep all the drama. Connect south to Surat Thani, the ancient Srivijaya trading port that anchors the Gulf coast, and let the islands of Koh Lanta's national park close out the trip. We Go Round Travel curates the south for people who have already done Phuket and know there is more.

South Thailand Highlights

Phang Nga Bay limestone karsts

Phang Nga Bay

Hundreds of limestone islands rising from emerald water. Sea-kayak through hongs — hidden lagoons enclosed inside hollow karsts, accessible only at low tide.

Khao Sok Cheow Lan Lake

Khao Sok

An ancient rainforest and the jewel of Ratchaprapha Reservoir — floating raft-houses, morning mist wildlife boat rides, and limestone towers above still green water.

Koh Yao Noi island

Koh Yao Noi

A Muslim fishing community between Phuket and Krabi. Rubber plantations, batik workshops, and one of the finest panoramas of Phang Nga Bay from any island.

Krabi limestone cliffs

Krabi (Off-Peak)

Most visitors come in December. Come in June instead and find empty beaches, the same karst formations, half the prices, and none of the crowds — the landscape does not change.

Surat Thani temple

Surat Thani

The ancient Srivijaya capital and gateway to the Gulf islands. Home to Wat Phra Borom That Chaiya — one of the oldest Buddhist monuments in Southeast Asia.

Koh Lanta beach and islands

Koh Lanta

Long stretches of sand backed by jungle, a national park with snorkelling reefs, and a laid-back old town with Chao Ley (sea nomad) heritage stretching back centuries.

Best Time to Visit South Thailand

Because the two coasts face opposite monsoons, there is almost always a perfect window to visit somewhere in south Thailand — even if one coast is wet, the other is dry. Here is a quick reference:

Andaman Coast

Nov – Apr: Prime Season

The Andaman Sea is at its clearest and calmest from November through April. This is when the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, the karst beaches of Krabi, and the waters around Koh Yao Noi are at their most photogenic.

  • Dec – Feb: cool, calm, peak crowds
  • Mar – Apr: warm and still beautiful, fewer visitors
  • May – Oct: southwest monsoon; heavy rain, rough seas

Gulf Coast

Jun – Oct: Prime Season

The Gulf coast is sheltered from the southwest monsoon and actually experiences its driest, sunniest months when the Andaman is wet. Surat Thani and Khao Sok are excellent June to October — the reservoir is full and the rainforest is lush.

  • Jun – Oct: warm, calm Gulf seas; Khao Sok at its greenest
  • Feb – May: also workable on the Gulf side
  • Nov – Jan: northeast monsoon brings heavy rain to Gulf coast
